BATAVIA, Ohio (Sept. 21, 2015) — The Adams-Clermont Solid Waste District will hold free Tire Amnesty Days from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 16-17 at the Franklin Township Administration Building, 981 Hopewell Road, Felicity, and the Adams Waste & Recycling, 95 Trefz Road, West Union. Tires from junk yards, trucking, or other companies won’t be accepted but the Solid Waste District can assist businesses in finding recycling options. Call 513-732-7745 for more details or visit www.oeq.net.
If “orphan” tires have been dumped on your property, please call 513-732-7745 to make clean-up arrangements.
Not only do they look bad, but scrap tires can pose a health and safety risk by acting as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and vermin. If left in the environment for long periods of time, orphan tires can leach toxic chemicals, such as zinc, heavy metals, vulcanization and rubber chemicals into ground and surface waters. Municipal solid waste landfills won’t collect tires on trash routes and can’t accept them at their landfills. Dumping scrap tires over the hillside or on the side of the road is illegal and harmful to the environment.

BATAVIA, Ohio (Sept. 11, 2015) – Local public health officials have issued a recreational public health advisory for the Ohio River as a result of microcystin levels tested in river water samples. Microcystin is a toxic chemical produced by cyanobacteria, often called blue-green algae. Some species of blue-green algae cause harmful algal blooms (HABs) which produce toxins like microcystin, which can make people and pets sick, depending upon the amount and type of exposure.
An advisory means toxin levels exceed the recommended threshold. Swimming or wading is not recommended for the elderly or very young and people with compromised immune systems.
Multiple state and local organizations including Clermont County Public Health, Cincinnati Health Department, Northern Kentucky Health Department,Hamilton County Public Health, Ohio EPA, Greater Cincinnati Water Works, Kentucky Division of Water, and Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission – are continuously monitoring and analyzing the presence of algae in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky portion of the Ohio River.
Last weekend, health officials urged residents to use caution when swimming or doing other recreational water activities as weather conditions were favorable for HABs to bloom in the Ohio River.
HAB toxins can cause a rash, hives, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and more severe symptoms at elevated levels of exposure. Seek immediate medical attention if you become sick after recreating on the Ohio River.
For tips to avoid becoming ill from contact with blue-green algae, visit the Clermont Public Health website at http://www.clermonthealthdistrict.org/.

We also remember the courage of firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel and scores of private citizens that showed the true meaning of heroism. BATAVIA, Ohio (Sept. 1, 2015) — September is National Preparedness Month. It is the time of year to take steps to prepare in the event of an emergency.
Less than half of all Americans have an emergency plan. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that individuals be prepared to provide for themselves for at least three days following an emergency, but in a 2009 survey, 61% of those polled expected to rely upon emergency responders during those first 72 hours.
Take the time this month to create a family emergency plan, and visit www.ready.gov for more preparedness information. You’ll find information on how to prepare for tornadoes and floods, among other disasters.
