Batavia, Ohio.  The University Air Care helicopter and flight team dropped in on campers at the Clermont County Reds Rookie Success League in Batavia Township on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.  “Air Care transports over 1,000 patients every year,” said Miami Township flight nurse Jason Peng.  “We provide emergency response and transportation to hospitals for people critically injured in crashes and involved in other types of trauma.  You never know when you will need us; just a few weeks ago, we were called to transport a youth baseball player that got hit by a ball.  He’s okay, but it’s a reminder that you need to wear your helmets and other protective gear and pay attention to your surroundings at all times.”  On Mondays and Tuesdays, through July 3, 2012, the RRSL free camp for Clermont County children, teaches them baseball and life lessons.

Peng told the 250, 6 through 12-year-olds attending the camp at the Batavia Township Community Center ball fields, that while he has only been flying as part of the team for a year, he loves his job.  “It’s great to be able to practice medicine outside of a hospital setting and help the critically injured,” he said.  Jim Pace, lead pilot for Air Care, encouraged the kids to always wear seat belts in cars and protective helmets when they are on their bikes.  “We have seen it, these simple procedures can and do save lives,” said Pace, a former military helicopter pilot who now commands the BK-117 transport copter.

As the children inspected the helicopter, they asked Air Care staff members Peng and Pace, along with Dr. Jeff Hill and flight nurse Meg Candage lots of questions about their jobs and how the helicopter works.  After explaining the BK-117 carries about 150 gallons of fuel, pilot Pace laughed after one camper said, “How many bathtubs would that fill up?”  He admitted this time, he didn’t have an answer!
